Need to share your Social Security Number? Use a self-destructing link instead of email or text.
A US Social Security Number is a nine-digit string assigned once for life by the SSA, formatted XXX-XX-XXXX, with no central revocation procedure. Unlike a card that can be reissued in a week, an SSN follows you forever, so exposure starts a multi-year cleanup rather than a one-time fraud event. Combined with name and date of birth, it unlocks credit cards, auto loans, federal benefits, and the IRS e-file pipeline.
Everyday channels retain the digits. A photo of the paper card lands in Apple Photos and is OCR-scanned into the iCloud index. Texting over SMS leaves a carrier copy (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T) that subpoenas surface for years. Resumes uploaded to LinkedIn or Indeed have repeatedly been scraped with full nine-digit numbers.
PasteOnce fits the moment the digits have to leave your hands and land where a clerk keys them into the system that needs them — a loan officer on Encompass, an HR generalist on Workday, a CPA filing through Drake or Lacerte. The link opens once, the ciphertext is destroyed, no residue lives in chat history. Pair it with permanent credit freezes and an IRS IP PIN.
Client-side encrypted. We can't see your data.
Your data is encrypted in your browser before it leaves your device.
Messages are automatically deleted after being read once.
We never see your data. Only encrypted blobs pass through our servers.
Links work exactly once. Refresh the page and it's gone forever.
Your sensitive data is encrypted in your browser using AES-256-GCM. The encryption key is generated randomly and never sent to our servers.
Only the encrypted blob is stored in our database, with an automatic expiration time. We literally cannot read your data.
When your recipient opens the link, the encrypted data is fetched and immediately deleted from our servers using an atomic Redis GETDEL. The key in the URL hash decrypts the message in their browser.
File one freeze at equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services, another at experian.com/freeze, and a third at transunion.com/credit-freeze. Each portal is independent and free under federal law since 2018. Add a fourth at ChexSystems for checking-account opening fraud.
Visit irs.gov/getanippin and request a six-digit Identity Protection PIN. The IRS then rejects any e-filed return missing the current year's PIN, neutralizing the most common refund-theft pattern even when your number is already in circulation. The PIN regenerates every January.
Register at ssa.gov/myaccount with your real address and enable Block Electronic Access, or sign up for E-Verify Self Lock through the my E-Verify portal. Once locked, no online transaction can use your SSN against those systems until you unlock it.
Type the digits into a one-time link rather than photographing the paper card. Pair with an out-of-band call where the recipient reads back the last four. The full string never enters Photos, Files, or Messages.
A hiring manager needs your SSN for the I-9 and W-4 inside Workday, BambooHR, or Rippling. Instead of emailing a scan, paste the digits into a one-time link sent to the HR generalist who keys them in.
A loan officer pulls a tri-merge credit report through Encompass or Calyx and needs the SSN for that pull. Send it through a one-time link; nothing remains in the broker's email thread for the decade of NMLS audit retention.
Several state DMVs (California, New York, Illinois) ask for an SSN during a REAL ID application even though the federal card does not display it. Send the digits to the title clerk rather than handing the paper card across a counter where a phone camera waits.
If you operate as a sole proprietor without an EIN, the W-9 expects your SSN as the taxpayer identifier. Submit the signed form with the TIN box blank, then PasteOnce the digits separately to the AP clerk.
Only in extreme cases — domestic abuse, religious-objection conflicts, or sustained identity theft where every other remedy has failed. The SSA requires documented evidence at a field office, and a new number does not erase the old earnings record. Freezes plus an IRS IP PIN are realistic.
Report at identitytheft.gov to generate an FTC recovery plan, file Form 14039 if a return is involved, place a fraud alert and then a permanent freeze at all three bureaus, and pull a Social Security Statement at ssa.gov to check for unfamiliar earnings.
No. The agency opens almost all taxpayer contact by paper mail to the address on your most recent return. A caller demanding immediate payment or asking for gift cards is running an impersonation pattern. Verify by dialing the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.
Push back first. Most providers and landlords ask out of habit rather than legal requirement. Offer a passport, driver's license, or insurance member ID instead. When genuinely required for employment or a mortgage, deliver it through a one-time link.
